Yukon Polo Starts Oct 8! Get registered!

Fall 2009 / Winter 2010

It's hard to believe that it's that time of year again when the rivers are drying up and we're thinking about polo again...

Due to having a lot of interest last year, we have booked two nights for the 2009-2010 season: Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Play time will be set set at 1 hour or 1.5 hours depending on registration for each night. Note that it is possible that one night is 1 hour and the other night is 1.5 hours.

There was also some feedback last year that some people would rather play a game that is focussed more on the game itself (faster pace, setting up plays, improving technique), and others are looking for more of a laid-back atmosphere.

As such, I am proposing that the people looking for a faster paced game tend toward registering on Thursdays, and those looking for a more laid back atmosphere tend toward registering on Tuesdays.

This does not guarantee anything; I am not going to enforce a different rule structure for each night, nor will there be any requests that any specific person register on one night or the other. It's just to somewhat match people with what they are expecting.

Registration:

Last year we started with 32 registered players and 1.5 hours play time and went to 36 players / 2 hours play time. Most of the feedback was that this resulted in too many subs. This year the registration for each night will be capped at 16 for 1 hour play time and 24 for 1.5 hours play time. Note that registration for one night does not give access to the other night.

Drop-in policy is still being determined, but the drop-in cost will be $15 per session (plus the one-time CKC membership fee). Drop in spots may be limited.

Reserve your spot as follows:

Step 1:

  • send the e-mail indicating your interest and night preference
  • spots fill in order of time stamp on e-mail

Step 2:

  • PAY UP ON OR BEFORE THURSDAY OCTOBER 1, 2009 to reserve spot. After this it may be sold at the registration meeting.
  • Advance payment may be made by:
  • 1) e-mail money transfer
  • 2) cheque payable to Calgary Kayak Club left in my mailbox (8551 34th Avenue NW)
  • 3) cash (I assume no responsibility for cash left in my mailbox; someone is often home - ring the bell).

Notes:

  • We will consider a pro-rated registration fee for later registrants if space permits.
  • Drop-ins will be accepted only if there are less than 24 registered players.

When you sign up you claim a spot that someone else can no longer buy. When we book pool time at SAIT it is a financial commitment and as such we have the following policy on cancellations/reimbursement:

    • Up to the first game of a season cancellations will be accepted with full refund.
    • After the first game there will be no refunds. You are welcome to sell your spot to someone else.

If you have any questions, please contact Steve Clemens at 403-695-5727 or email clemistry (at) gamil (dot) com.

    Equipment:

  • Helmets with face masks are provided and mandatory to play.
  • You can bring your own clean boat (there is a hose at sait to clean it out with if necessary).
  • Boats can be left at your own risk.
  • Bring your own paddle - edges must be taped to protect hands from being cut by sharp edges.
  • SAIT has PFDs which can be used, but you'd probably prefer your own if you have one
  • As in the past, Aquabatics has graciously allowed us use of their demo fleet for the duration of the time that it is located at SAIT. Please respect the equipment.
  • Map To SAIT:

The best place to park is south of the C-Train tracks and on the south-east side of ACAD. The pool can validate parking, so bring your ticket in with you and remember to scan it before you leave! Here is a map of the area...
